Holiday with dog

It will soon begin again – our beloved travel season. For many people, their four-legged friends are an integral part of the family and of course cannot be left out on vacation.
There are many different ways to plan a holiday with your dog – for example, an active hiking holiday in the mountains or the more relaxed option of a beach holiday.

You can now search specifically for dog-friendly accommodation or holiday destinations. From campsites to hotels to holiday apartments, everything is now possible with four-legged friends.

What should you consider when going on holiday with your dog? In the following blog post we will give you some tips that can help you plan your holiday.

Check entry requirements

Entry requirements and local regulations can vary from country to country, so be sure to find out in advance.

You can enter most European countries with your dog without any problems. You are required to carry the EU pet passport, which shows that your dog has received all the necessary vaccinations.

Did you know? In some holiday resorts it is compulsory to keep your four-legged friends on a leash. In many countries it is also mandatory that dogs wear a muzzle on public transport. It is important to find out about the holiday destination/country in good time.

Preliminary check at the vet

Find out in advance whether there is an increased risk of transmission of certain infectious diseases at your destination. In some popular holiday destinations, diseases exist that do not yet occur in Germany. Therefore, consult your veterinarian in good time.

Did you know? Sand flies live in warm regions such as Italy, Spain or Greece and transmit leishmania. To avoid infection, you can use spot-on preparations, for example. It is best to discuss with your vet what exactly is the right measure for your dog.

Travel luggage for your dog - packing list

  • Dog food (please bring enough)
  • Food bowl/ water bowl
  • Sleeping place/ blanket
  • Toys, possibly also water toys
  • First aid kit (medicines)
  • Towel & Bathrobe
  • Treat bag
  • Snacks
  • Important documents (vaccination certificate etc.)

Well prepared for emergencies

Before you travel, find out where there are veterinary clinics and/or veterinarians and write down the relevant contact details. In the event of an emergency, you need to act quickly - if you are already prepared, you won't have to frantically search around and you will know immediately who to contact or where to go.

It is also a good idea to take a first aid kit with you. You can use it to store your dog's medication, but also to store emergency supplies. Bandages, gauze, wound disinfectants, plasters and disposable gloves should always be on hand.

Bathing day with dog

When choosing a spot on the beach or lake, make sure that there are enough places for your dog to find shade. Alternatively, you can take a parasol with you and set it up. Remember that dogs can also get sunstroke and sunburn. So try to avoid the midday heat.

If it is a little cooler and windier, don't forget to dry your dog with a towel after bathing. A dog bathrobe can also be very helpful in this case. Simply throw it on and your dog will be nicely wrapped up.

To prevent dehydration, you should always have enough water and a bowl to go for your four-legged friend. Make sure that your dog drinks enough fluids. If you are spending your vacation by the sea, always make sure that your dog does not drink too much salt water. This can lead to stomach problems and diarrhea.

We wish you a relaxing holiday with your four-legged friend!
