How important is dog bed hygiene?

The dog bed is the center of the dog's everyday life because a large part of it takes place there. This is where you doze off after long walks, recharge your batteries for the next round of walks and cuddle with your favorite toy. Grooming the fur and claws, nibbling on a chewing bone with pleasure and observing family life. In addition, your dog can retreat to his personal resting place at any time when friends or family visit.

Since the dog bed is so often used as a popular retreat, it is extremely important that the dog bed is easy and thorough to clean. In this article we have summarized important information that you should know about the hygiene of the dog bed.

Why is it important to wash the dog bed regularly?

Experience has shown that many dog owners wash their dog beds too rarely. Most of the time, dog beds are simply vacuumed or wiped, believing that this is sufficient. But this is not the case.

In addition to the externally visible dirt, the comfortable berths are also an ideal incubator for microscopic creatures such as mites and bacteria. You should definitely not underestimate these impurities that are not or barely visible, as they stubbornly adhere to the surface of the dog bed. Some parasites and protozoa can also spread to other animals if hygiene is poor. For example, infection with Giardia.

Hygienic washing of the dog bed is therefore essential and helps to reduce both surface dirt and invisible residues on the dog bed to a minimum. In addition, bad odors are also effectively removed from the material.

What residue collects in the dog bed?

Visible traces

  • Dog hair
  • Remains of food, chewing bones and treats
  • Earth, sand and dirt from the fur
  • Talc and fat deposits
  • Saliva residue
  • dandruff
  • Claw remains

Invisible traces

  • Mites
  • Parasites
  • Urine residue (incontinence)
  • Ticks, fleas
  • Bacteria, viruses, protozoa (including e.g. Giardia)
  • House dust
  • Germs
  • Shed

Why should the dog bed be washable at high temperatures?

Dog beds can often only be washed at 30 °C, if at all. At such low washing temperatures, bacteria, viruses and other germs feel particularly comfortable and can multiply ideally. Only at higher temperatures above 60°C are the invisible impurities completely removed.

So when choosing your dog bed, make sure that it has a removable cover that you can wash hygienically.

How often should the dog bed be cleaned?

How often a dog bed should be cleaned depends on a few individual factors.

Some dog breeds lose more hair, others less. Depending on whether you
If you often go out and about with your dog in the city or if you prefer to spend your time together in the forest or park, your dog will sometimes bring in more or less dirt from outside. The season and the weather also play an important role in how quickly the dog bed gets dirty.

It is therefore not possible to say in general terms how often a dog bed should be cleaned. For consistent basic hygiene, we recommend that you wash the cover of the dog bed once a month. If your dog lies on blankets, you can even wash them every week.
